History

Label Curatorial emerged from the fulcrum of the DIY era beginning in 1987 when the 18-year-old Laura Whitcomb organized a cross section of British designers including Vivienne Westwood, John Crancher, House of Beauty and Culture, Site, Stephen Jones and Stephen Linard to intersect with Los Angeles artists. The exhibition and series of iterations were presented at the California Mart that ended for a finale show at the famed club Dirtbox. Mary Rourke of the LA Times wrote of the enterprise “But for all the impromptu, unprofessional, helter-skelter amateurism of it, the show itself was mesmerizing.”

After existing as a clothing brand in NYC (1995-2010) and Los Angeles (2000-2002) gallery store which engaged clothing themes with art exhibitions, Label became Label Curatorial in 2012. The curatorial has organized the archives of many key American and European artists and established scholarship on many unknown artists and movements that have largely re-contextualized the history of Californian art. The curatorial's exhibitions and performances have focused on the convergence of art, film, dance and experimental music presenting the key dynamic of California as its autochthonous expression.
