Dilexi Gallery Retrospective
Label Curatorial - Dilexi Multivenue Retrospective, was staged at 6 galleries across California. The galleries included Parrasch Heijnen, Parker Gallery, Crown Point Press, Brian Gross Fine Art, The Landing and Marc Selwyn. The retrospective was reviewed by the notable art critic Jonathan Griffin as one of five key shows in 2019.
The Dilexi Retrospective presented a preview of the curatorial’s eight year project of the Bay Area artist and poet run galleries in the Bay Area from 1949-1965 focusing on the Dilexi gallery which ran from 1958-1969 which was established by Jim Newman and Robert Alexander. Although Alexander only stayed on for one year the publication and exhibitions focused on the gallery’s years from 1958-1969 followed by the rich period of its aftermath when Newman established the Dilexi Foundation. The aftermath under Newman’s directions included films of Yvonne Rainer, Terry Riley, Arlo Acton, Andy Warhol, Walter de Maria, William Wiley, Robert Nelson, Sun Ra, and a documentary that focused on the work of La Monte Young, Marian Zazeela, and Pandit Pran Nath. Many of these films were shown over the course of events during the retrospective. The retrospective closed with a private performance by Terry Riley who premiered his work Chasing Satie. .
